Exploring International Silk Festival: International Students Embark on a Cultural Journey with SCi-KKU

On December 9, 2023, the Faculty of Science at Khon Kaen University, led by Dr. Sukhum Raungchai, the Assistant Dean for International Affairs and Public Communication, and Ms. Sutthida Sesthamat, International Relations Officer, organized a visit for international students to the Khon Kaen International Silk Festival, which took place from November 29, 2023, to December 10, 2023.

Dr. Sukhum provided an introduction to the traditional houses in the Northeastern region, characterized by a solid wood structure, a square shape (known as “House Chute”), a gable roof, and either round columns or square pillars. The roof is adorned with a woven bamboo lid featuring a dragon pattern or a wooden board cover.

Furthermore, he shared information about the “Phuk Sieo” ceremony, a friendship ritual rooted in Northeastern tradition, dedicated to strengthening bonds of friendship between individuals.

Dr. Sukhum also enlightened the international students about the silk-making process, explaining that silkworm larvae are fed with mulberry leaves. After the fourth moult, they climb a twig placed nearby and spin their silken cocoons. These cocoons are treated with boiling water, and the silk is delicately unwound. The process ultimately results in the production of silk. The students expressed great interest in learning about silk. Additionally, at the conclusion of the silk tour, they had the opportunity to taste fried worms in a can with various flavors such as Tom Yum and Cheese.

In conclusion, the SCi-KKU cultural trip aimed to reintroduce Isan culture and wisdom to international students, allowing them to discover what Khon Kaen has to offer. The trip also provided an opportunity to savor traditional Isan food.
