“International Students Delight in Traditional Thai Khon Performance at Khon Kaen National Museum”
On December 23, 2023, from 5 PM to 8 PM, SCi international students immersed themselves in the captivating world of Khon, a classical dance drama genre originating from Thailand. Khon, rooted in the tales of the epic Ramakien (a Thai adaptation of the Indian Hindu epic Ramayana), has been a cultural treasure since the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
Originally exclusive to male performers, Khon now embraces diversity with women taking on roles as monkeys and demons, a departure from their traditional portrayal as angels and goddesses. Historically reserved for the royal family, Khon has evolved to showcase its beauty through realistic dance moves, particularly in the portrayal of monkeys. Training for Khon begins at a young age, emphasizing flexibility and intricate dancing postures, especially for characters like the Vanara, or forest dwellers.

Recognizing the value of this opportunity for international students to delve into Thai culture through Khon, the Faculty of Science organized an exchange activity. The students had the unique chance to witness a spectacular performance presented by The Fine Arts Department 8 Khon Kaen at Khon Kaen National Museum. This event was part of the celebrating event titled “The 5th Decade of Khon Kaen National Museum.”
Expressing deep interest in immersing themselves in Thai culture, the students were overwhelmed as they witnessed the authentic display while adorned in traditional Thai costumes. Also, we as the Faculty of Science would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the Fine Arts Department 8 Khon Kaen for organizing this event and providing a cost-free experience for all to appreciate and enjoy.
