National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) presented the National Research Award: Honorary invention award of the year 2022 in the field of information technology and communication science to Dr. Thanaphong Intra, Department of Statistics, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University and his team. The invention namely “Personal Detection System Camouflaged Firearms Through Video Analysis of CCTV”, is a work that is beneficial to society and the public in preventing upcoming crimes.
The current crime situation has become more and more violent, especially in risk areas where there are frequent problems such as department stores, gold shops, and banks, although, at present, CCTV cameras are popular and widely used to monitor the situation; however, the cameras cannot alert or detect the nature of the events. The CCTV cameras are thus utilized to record the events only.
Dr. Thanaphong Intra, head of the research team, stated that crimes happen frequently causing huge losses. This is why department stores, gold shops, and banks need crime insurance to be compensated if the unexpected events happen. However, it cannot compensate for the lives that may have been lost. The research team, therefore, developed a system for detecting persons at risk of disguising firearms by analyzing real-time video from CCTV cameras using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and Deep Learning. AI will detect things in the event which can identify both individuals with normal behavior, and those who exhibit potential behavior of disguising firearms. It identifies a particular group of people; deep processing is used in distinguishing individuals who exhibit different behaviors and notify the specified person to receive the notification message to continue to prevent or suppress the incident. At present, such a system is under development and will be used in practice which will help reduce damage to both life and property, minimize the severity of incidents, and will result in the business expansion based on this invention.
The system to detect persons who camouflage firearms through CCTV received the National Research Award: The Invention Award for the year 2022 from NRCT during the National Research Award Presentation Ceremony which will be held at the Inventor’s Day event between 2-6 February 2022 at the BITEC Exhibition and Convention Center Bangkok. The event is to promote and support research development invention and honor Thai researchers that have made benefits to the nation and the academic community.
