Physics SCiKKU Hosts The 20th Siam Physics Congress (SPC2025), Attracting Over 600 Researchers from across Thailand and abroad

The Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with the Thai Physics Society, is organizing the national physics conference “The 20th Siam Physics Congress (SPC2025)” under the theme “Synergizing Physics Co-creativity.” The event will take place from June 11-13, 2025, at the Pullman Khon Kaen Raja Orchid Hotel in Khon Kaen, with over 600 participants from across Thailand and abroad.

The opening ceremony on June 12, 2025, was honored by several distinguished guests. Professor Supreedee Pinitsoontorn, Head of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, delivered a report on the event’s organization. Associate Professor Saroj Rujirawat, President of the Thai Physics Society, extended a warm welcome to all participants. Professor Pewpan Maleewong, Vice President for Research and Innovation at Khon Kaen University, presided over the official opening of the congress. Also gracing the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khatcharin Siriwong, Associate Dean for Administration, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rodjana Burakam, Associate Dean for Research, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Wuttichai Srisodaphol, Assistant Dean for Administration.

Throughout the three-day conference, participants engaged in knowledge exchange through academic lectures across 10 specialized areas. These included topics such as energy physics, quantum technology, astronomy, artificial intelligence for materials science, and innovative physics. The event also featured research presentations in both oral and poster formats.

In addition, several special activities garnered significant interest. These included the Undergraduate Physics Independent Project Competition, vying for the Royal Trophy of Galyani Vadhana, Princess of Naradhiwas, and the ThEP Hackathon Season 3, co-organized by the Thailand Center of Excellence in Physics (ThEP) and the Khon Kaen University Science Park.

Mahidol Wittayanusorn Student “Fay” Shares Inspiration Behind Muon Detector Project at National Physics Conference

Ms. Pitchaya Krajangwittaya, or “Fay” as she’s affectionately known, a 12th-grade student from Mahidol Wittayanusorn School, presented her project, “Enhancing Muon Detection with the Portable M-wayu Prototype.” She shared her inspiration, stating, “We were interested in cosmic rays, which are high-energy particles from outer space. We had the opportunity to collaborate with Chiang Mai University, which aimed to develop an easy-to-use and affordable cosmic ray detector because existing ones in Thailand are not convenient to use and require computer connections.”

Fay also expressed her impressions of participating in the event: “I feel incredibly happy and honored to present my work on a national stage. Being in an atmosphere where everyone shares the same interest in physics, sharing our work, and receiving advice made me feel that our efforts were meaningful. What I gained most was having my world opened up to physics research. I saw how diverse physics research is and how it can be further developed or used to solve real-world problems.”

For students interested in physics projects but hesitant to start, Fay offered this advice: “Don’t think you need to be excellent or know everything before you can do it. Doing research or a project is about gradually learning through hands-on work. We don’t need to have grand ideas from the start; just begin with something small that you’re curious or interested in and then develop it. The most important thing is our determination.”

Closing Ceremony and Awards Presentation at the 20th Siam Physics Congress

The 20th Siam Physics Congress (SPC2025) concluded on June 13, 2025, with a closing ceremony and awards presentation for winners in various categories. The event was honored by the presence of Associate Professor Boonruksa Sundaratham, Advisor to the Thai Physics Society; Associate Professor Saroj Rujirawat, President of the Thai Physics Society; and Professor Supree Pinitsoontorn, Head of the Department of Physics, Khon Kaen University. They jointly presented the awards and delivered the closing remarks for the congress.

This conference served as a crucial platform for connecting physics knowledge from researchers across the country. It aligns perfectly with the Faculty of Science’s mission to produce internationally recognized research and innovation, as well as to develop high-quality scientific personnel for the continued progress of the nation.
